Creative and multi-faceted, the conceptual artist Luigi Ontani renders himself the subject of his work. From his tableaux vivants of the 1970s to his most recent works, he is both the creator and protagonist. Photography, tableaux vivants, papier-mache, wood, glass and ceramics are simply vehicles for the representation of myth, masks, symbolism and religion.
In 2015, he received the Premio Presidente della Repubblica from the Accademia di San Luca, the art academy founded in Rome at the end of the 16th century. Ontani curated the solo show which opened two years later in the Academy, presenting a retrospective of his artistic development in 60 works from the 1970s to the present. “SanLuMalinIconicoAttoniTonicoEstEstE’tico” is a reference to his latest works, ceramic sculptures produced in the Bottega Gatti in Faenza. Roman by adoption, he lives and works in the studio of the Neo-Classical sculptor Canova.
