For Shenny Cruces AIR 2017, “the act of collecting is an intrinsic part of my process and my work. For this residency, I sought to collect and process through the overwhelming layers of imagery and architecture of the city of Rome itself. Layers of ornate expression fill every crevice, every visual and physical space. Acanthus leaves, brick, quatrefoils, ancient ruins, sacred spaces, neighborhoods are all clad in the veneer of modern cityscapes, graffiti. The excavation of these layers became the guide for my work at CRETA. The repeated form of the quatrefoil and the layered imagery within express the human need to define our physical environment.”
