La mostra continua la lunga esplorazione di Mathew McConnell sui persistenti problemi di invenzione, originalità e influenza creativa nella produzione artistica. La sua pratica esiste in un ciclo enfaticamente stretto di influenza e risposta, reso possibile dalla connettività della nostra era digitale.  Usando il campionamento e la duplicazione come strategie primarie, McConnell lavora direttamente dalle immagini e dal linguaggio di altri artisti contemporanei, selezionando, rubando, lievitando e manipolando le fonti, spremendole come una miniera di ispirazione per i suoi processi idiosincratici.  Le opere risultanti tentano di conciliare la differenza tra ciò che è un'arte creata da qualcun altro e ciò che è genuinamente dell'artista stesso.

BIO

Mathew McConnell (lui/lui, nato nel 1979, USA) ha conseguito un MFA presso l'Università del Colorado, Boulder e un BFA presso la Valdosta State University. Ha presentato numerose mostre personali tra cui alla Mindy Solomon Gallery di Miami, in Florida, e alla Jane Hartsook Gallery alla Greenwich House Pottery di New York City. I suoi lavori sono stati inseriti in oltre 70 mostre collettive a livello nazionale e internazionale. Mathew ha tenuto numerose conferenze ed è stato oggetto di articoli su Ceramics Art and Perception, Ceramics Monthly e New Ceramics. Ha ricevuto un Emerging Artist Award dal National Council on Education in Ceramic Art ed è stato Artist in Residence presso la Archie Bray Foundation, Greenwich House Pottery e Anderson Ranch Arts Center.

The exhibition continues McConnell’s long exploration into the persistent problems of invention, originality, and creative influence in art making. His practice exists in an emphatically tight loop of influence and response, enabled by the connectivity of our digital era. Using sampling and duplication as primary strategies, McConnell works directly from the images and language of other contemporary artists—selecting, stealing, stretching, and manipulating sources—wringing them for inspiration for his idiosyncratic processes. The resulting works attempt to reconcile the difference between what is an art of someone else’s making and that which is genuinely of the artist himself. 

 

BIO

Mathew McConnell (he/him, b. 1979, USA) holds an MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a BFA from Valdosta State University. He has presented numerous solo exhibitions including at Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami, Florida and the Jane Hartsook Gallery at Greenwich House Pottery in New York City. His works have been included in over 70 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Mathew has lectured widely, and has been subject of feature-length articles in Ceramics Art and Perception, Ceramics Monthly, and New Ceramics.
