C.R.E.T.A. Rome è lieta di invitarti alla mostra degli attuali artisti in residenza, Serena Perrone (USA/Italia), Lisa Nappa (USA), Roger Ralston (USA), Wendy DesChene (Canada) + Jeff Schmuki (USA). Gli artisti presenteranno le opere create durante la loro residenza a CRETA Rome, via dei Delfini 17, il 24 giugno ore 18:00.

C.R.E.T.A. Rome is pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition of the current artists in residence, Serena Perrone (USA/Italy), Lisa Nappa (USA), Roger Ralston (USA), Wendy DesChene (Canada) + Jeff Schmuki (USA). The artists will present the work created during their residency at CRETA Rome, via dei Delfini 17, 24 June from 18:00.

SERENA PERRONE

"STORIES FROM A GOOD DEATH"

Le opere in Stories from a Good Death alludono a vicende vissute dall'artista in Sicilia nei giorni precedenti alla sua residenza a C.R.E.T.A. Rome. Testimonianza intima di una morte, l'artista concettualizza il vero evento con riferimenti al lessico visivo della statuaria funeraria, scientifica e religiosa che comprende le opere allegoriche di Bernini, i 'teatri' anatomici in cera dello scultore siciliano Gaetano Giulio Zumbo e i statuari religiosi dei Li Volsi a Tusa, Sicilia, seconda casa dell'artista. Queste opere allo stesso tempo commemorano un'esperienza e racchiudano idee di trasformazione, destino, desiderio e mistero.

Serena Perrone ha conseguito un M.F.A. dalla Rhode Island School of Design ed è attualmente Assistant Professor of Printmaking (Tenure-Track) presso la Georgia State University. Mostre personali recenti includono Spring/Break Art Fair a New York, il Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis e il Print Center a Philadelphia. The works in Stories from a Good Death allude to events experienced by the artist in Sicily in the days prior to her residency at C.R.E.T.A Rome. Bearing intimate witness to a death, the artist conceptualizes the true event with references to the visual lexicon of funerary, scientific, and religious statuary that includes Bernini's allegorical works, the anatomical wax 'theaters' of the Sicilian sculptor Gaetano Giulio Zumbo, and the religious statuary of the Li Volsi in Tusa, Sicily, the artist's second home. These works at once memorialize an experience and enfold ideas of transformation, destiny, desire, and mystery.

Serena Perrone holds an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently the Assistant Professor of Printmaking (Tenure-Track) at Georgia State University. Recent solo exhibitions include Spring/Break Art Fair in New York, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and the Print Center in Philadelphia. Her work is collected by numerous institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and Philadelphia Museum of Art. She is the 2022 recipient of the Idea Capital Antinori Visual Artist Grant for her ongoing project “Smarrimento/Apparizione”; a Pre-Tenure Scholarly Support Grant and a Welch Faculty Research Exchange Grant from Georgia State University, a Pollock-Krasner Grant, and was a Pew Fellowship nominee. A dual-citizen, she resides between the United States and Italy, where she maintains her primary studio practice and is the Founder and Director of Officina Stamperia del Notaio, an international artists' residency program in Sicily. She is represented by Cade Tompkins Projects.

ROGER RALSTON

"From farther away than I can imagine"

Come preparazione per una mostra in ottobre, sto lavorando su idee che amplierò per la mostra. Stavo cercando e mettendo insieme idee e forme per il prossimo ciclo di creazione. Mi sono impegnato a giocare con l'idea di contenitori offrenti che deriva dai bronzi cinesi e dai loro antecedenti ceramici. Mentre qui a Roma, altri riferimenti si sono insinuati nel lavoro. Le offerte, la mano di Dio, le piccole figure che segnano le piazze, le costruzioni e le ricostruzioni messe insieme pesano nel suggerire direzioni. Sono stato coinvolto nella conversazione tra l'orgoglio per il lavoro ben fatto e l'accettazione di "funk". Far funzionare le cose e fare il meglio che si puoi è stato un dialogo.

Roger Ralston è un artista e insegnante che vive a Spokane, Washington. Il suo lavoro include arte pubblica, installazioni, sculture su piccola scala, disegni e attività basate sul web. Durante lo sviluppo del lavoro, Roger ricerca la storia di un luogo. Una parte di questo lavoro consiste nell'avere un'idea del luogo e di come le persone si muovono e conoscono cineticamente un luogo. Come aspetto di questo, Roger è interessato alla bellezza del quotidiano e lo coglie nel suo lavoro.
Roger ha conseguito il MFA presso la Louisiana State University e una laurea presso il Lewis and Clark College, a Portland, nell'Oregon. È entusiasta di vivere in Occidente, dove l'ambiente lo ispira quotidianamente.

As preparation for an exhibition in October, I am working on ideas I will enlarge for the exhibit. I have been looking and pulling together ideas and forms for the next cycle of making.

I have been engaged playing with the idea of offering containers. This derives from Chinese bronzes and their ceramic antecedents. While here, other references have crept into the work. Offerings, the hand of God, small figures marking plazas, and cobbled together constructions and reconstructions all weigh in suggesting directions.

I have been drawn into the conversation between pride in work well done, and an acceptance of a funk. Making things work and doing the best you can has been a dialog.

Roger Ralston is an artist and teacher living in Spokane, Washington. His work Includes public art, installations, small-scale sculpture, drawings, and web based activities. When developing work, Roger researches a place’s history. A part of this work is having a feel of the place, and how people move through and kinetically know a place. As an aspect of this, Roger is interested in the beauty of the everyday and captures this is in his work.
Roger received his MFA from Louisiana State University and a BS from Lewis and Clark College, in Portland Oregon. He is thrilled to live in the West, where the environment inspires him daily.

LISA NAPPA

"The Shape of Water"

Spesso sono le cose a cui non riusciamo ad aggrapparci che mi intrigano, le ombre su un muro, il leggero movimento all'interno delle foglie su un albero, il riflesso della luce su uno specchio d'acqua. Questi momenti di fugace bellezza racchiudono una magia che è irraggiungibile e fanno emergere l'ultima emozione dell'effimero. C'è tristezza o solo il senso pratico di sapere che questo momento perfetto non può durare, non può essere contenuto o mantenuto eppure, questo è esattamente quello che cerco di fare.

Lisa Nappa è una scultrice di ceramica e artista di tecnica mista dello Stato di Washington. Il suo lavoro varia in scala, da oggetti intimi tenuti in mano a grandi installazioni su pareti e finestre. Nell'ultimo decennio, il suo lavoro è stato ispirato dalla bellezza e dalla politica sottostante dell'acqua. It is often the things that we cannot hold on to that intrigue me, shadows on a wall, slight movement within leaves on a tree, reflecting light on a body of water. These moments of fleeting beauty hold a magic that is unattainable and bring forth the ultimate emotion of ephemerality. There is sadness or just the practical sense of knowing that this perfect moment cannot last, cannot be contained or kept and yet, this is exactly what I try to do.

Lisa Nappa is a ceramic sculptor and mixed media artist from Washington State. Her work varies in scale, from intimate hand-held objects to large wall and window installations. For the last decade, her work has been inspired by the beauty and underlying politics of water. She exhibits her work nationally and internationally as well as participates in residencies throughout the world. Though she will never completely shed her New York City upbringing, she loves her current life surrounded by the mountains, skies, and scablands of the Inland Northwest.

WENDY DESCHENE + JEFF SCHMUKI

"Minihkweew (they drink)"

Le tazze e i piattini di Schmuki sono ispirati alla porcellana europea di inizio secolo e forniscono un veicolo per le immagini dipinte a mano di DesChene che simboleggiano il recupero dell'eredità Metis delle sue prime nazioni. Ogni tazza e piattino estende le narrazioni di bonifica culturale mentre le immagini autoctone lavorano per modificare il colonialismo dei precedenti coloni europei. Il team collaborativo di Wendy DesChene (Canada) e Jeff Schmuki (USA) è cresciuto con forti legami con la terra che li circonda. Wendy è un membro della nazione indigena Metis e Jeff è nato nel deserto di Sonora in Arizona, un ambiente di estremi che ha nutrito un rispetto unico per le nostre limitate risorse naturali. Creano installazioni, interventi e collaborazioni che combinano attivismo, ricerca e spazio sociale per favorire la discussione e generare azione. Schmuki’s wheel-thrown cups and saucers are inspired by turn-of-the-century European porcelain and provide a vehicle for DesChene's hand-painted imagery symbolizing the reclamation of her first nations Metis heritage. Each cup and saucer extends narratives of cultural reclamation as native imagery works to amend prior European settlers' colonialism. By exposing minority imagery through this multifaceted approach, suppressed stories are easier to identify, acknowledge and understand by diverse audiences.

The collaborative team of Wendy DesChene (Canada) and Jeff Schmuki (USA) were raised with strong connections to the land around them. Wendy is a member of the indigenous Metis Nation and Jeff was born in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, an environment of extremes that nurtured unique respect for our limited natural resources. They create installations, interventions, and collaborations that combine activism, research, and social space in order to foster discussion and generate action. DesChene + Schmuki has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pulitzer Foundation, and the Canada Council.
