C.R.E.T.A. Rome è lieta di invitarti alla mostra degli attuali artisti in residenza, Rebekah Bogard (USA), Heather Couch (USA) and Cooper Siegel (USA). Gli artisti presenteranno le opere create durante la loro residenza a CRETA Rome, via dei Delfini 17, venerdì il 22 luglio ore 18:30.

C.R.E.T.A. Rome is pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition of the current artists in residence, Rebekah Bogard (USA), Heather Couch (USA) and Cooper Siegel (USA). The artists will present the work created during their residency at CRETA Rome, via dei Delfini 17, Friday 22 July from 18:30.

"FAVOLE ROMANE"

Uso animali immaginari nelle mie opere per esplorare la narrativa della mia vita e della mia storia personale in quanto hanno la capacità di disarmare le aspettative. Mi piace usare gli animali perché sono creature belle e misteriose, vulnerabili alle relazioni con umani. Questa suscettibilità dà loro un senso di benevolenza che spesso manca alle interazioni umane. Utilizzo questa vulnerabilità come fonte di energia. Ci vogliono persone o animali coraggiosi e fiduciosi di rendersi vulnerabile, perché devono avere la forza per sopportarne le conseguenze.

Le creature immaginarie giustapposte ad animali veri sono lì per capovolgere il mondo e per lasciare lo spettatore sbilanciato. Modificando le regole di coinvolgimento, tutto è possibile nel mondo che creo. Le fantasie diventano realtà e i sogni diventano attuali. Le categorie di genere non esistono più. Le femmine possono esserlo più simili a maschi e maschi possono essere più simili a femmine.

Rebekah Bogard ha ricevuto il suo MFA presso l'Università del Nevada a Las Vegas nel 2003 ed è attualmente Assistant Professor in Ceramics presso l'Università del Nevada Reno. Lei ha ricevuto numerosi premi tra cui essere stato nominato "Artista emergente" dal National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts e la rivista Ceramics Monthly. Ha ottenuto una residenza presso il Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. Suo lavoro è stato esposto in diverse mostre personali e collettive a livello nazionale. Inoltre, il suo lavoro è stato recensito in pubblicazioni come Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, LA Times, Ceramics Monthly Magazine, Clay Times Magazine e Artweek.

I employ fictional animals in my artwork to explore the narrative of my life and my own personal history as they have the ability to disarm expectations. I enjoy utilizing animals because they are beautiful and mysterious creatures, vulnerable to relations with humans. This susceptibility gives them a sense of benevolence that is often lacking in human interactions. I use this vulnerability as a source of power. It takes a brave and confident person or animal to make themselves vulnerable, for they must have the strength to withstand the consequences.

The fictional creatures juxtaposed with non-fictional animals are there to turn the world up-side-down and to leave the viewer off balance. By changing the rules of engagement, anything is possible in the world I create. Fantasies become realities and dreams become actuality. Concrete gender roles no longer exist. Females can be more like males and males can be more like females.

Rebekah Bogard received her MFA from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2003 and is currently an Assistant Professor in Ceramics at University of Nevada Reno. She has received numerous awards including being named an “Emerging Artist” by both the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and Ceramics Monthly Magazine.

She has been awarded a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. Her work has been shown in several solo and group exhibitions nationwide. Moreover, her work has been reviewed in publications such as Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, LA Times, Ceramics Monthly Magazine, Clay Times Magazine, and Artweek.

"ON THIS DAY"

Abbracciare l'incertezza nello sforzo creativo facilita la resa dei conti con le sfide quotidiane della costruzione di un futuro in ambienti in rapido cambiamento. Il mio lavoro esplora il gesto attraverso una combinazione di cura e possibilità. Le forme componenti in argilla fresca vengono pressate e schiacciate ripetutamente per creare una trama ritmica che accentua o cancella le forme sottostanti. Come per gli strati della storia, l'agglomerazione di informazioni più o meno interessanti crea un oggetto amalgamato che rappresenta un momento effimero nel processo di creazione. L'abbraccio vivace del caso nel mio lavoro riflette le strutture mutevoli del pensiero dell'esperienza umana. La mia speranza è che la fragilità di ogni gesto catturi un simultaneo senso di movimento e di librarsi goffamente e con grazia.

Heather Couch è Assistant Professor di arte alla Palm Beach Atlantic University di West Palm Beach in Florida. Ha conseguito un MFA presso l'Arizona State University. Le sue mostre personali includono "Composing Texture" all'University of Dallas e "A Repeated State of Falling" alla Unleashed Art Fair. Il suo lavoro si trova in collezioni private e permanenti, tra cui il Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum di Mesa, in Arizona, e la Wasmer Gallery della Florida Gulf Coast University.

Embracing uncertainty in creative endeavor facilitates a reckoning with the everyday challenges of building a future in rapidly changing environments. My work explores gesture through a combination of care and chance. Component forms in wet clay are repetitively pressed and squeezed to create rhythmic texture that accentuates or obliterates the underlying forms. As with layers of history, the agglomeration of more or less interesting information creates an amalgamated object that represents an ephemeral moment in the creation process. The spirited embrace of chance in my work reflects the shifting structures of thought of human experience. It is my hope that the fragility of each gesture captures a simultaneous sense of motion and of hovering both awkwardly and gracefully.

Heather Couch is an Assistant Professor of Art at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. She received an MFA from Arizona State University. Solo exhibitions include “Composing Texture” at the University of Dallas and “A Repeated State of Falling” at the Unleashed Art Fair. Her work is found in private and permanent collection, including the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mesa, Arizona, and the Wasmer Gallery of Florida Gulf Coast University.

Cooper Siegel

"Terra Capovolta"

Sviluppando le idee esplorate durante il master, questo gruppo di oggetti si concentra principalmente sul concetto della forma. Oggetti formati attraverso la compressione, intrappolati da qualche parte tra distensione e collasso dove i confini tra interno ed esterno sono sfumati, si trova un equilibrio binario. All'interno di ogni oggetto più grande c'è un oggetto di materiale composito colato dentro cui si trova tutto il materiale smaltato che normalmente proteggerebbe l'oggetto più grande. In questo caso il materiale più resistente e protettivo diventa un materiale interno più vulnerabile che necessita di supporto.

Cooper Siegel è un artista e produttore che lavora principalmente con materiali e processi ceramici. Si è recentemente laureato alla Cranbrook Academy of Art di Bloomfield Hills, MI, con un MFA in ceramica e ha conseguito una laurea in ingegneria meccanica presso l'Elizabethtown College di Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. Ha esposto lavori a livello nazionale e internazionale in sedi tra cui, a titolo esemplificativo ma non esaustivo, The Clay Center di New Orleans, The Cranbrook Art Museum e Galerie Kerstan a Stoccarda, Germania.

Working adjacently to ideas explored during graduate school, this grouping of objects is focused primarily on form. Objects formed through compression, caught somewhere between expanse and collapse where the boundaries between interior and exterior are blurred, an equilibrium is found between binaries. In the interior of each larger object is an object of cast composite material. In these composite objects lies all of the glaze material that would usually be protecting the larger object. In this case the stronger more protective material becomes a more vulnerable interior material in need of support.

Cooper Siegel is an artist and maker working primarily with ceramic materials and processes. He recently graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI with an MFA in ceramics and holds a BS in mechanical engineering from Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA. He has exhibited work nationally and internationally at venues including but not limited to The Clay Center of New Orleans, The Cranbrook Art Museum and Galerie Kerstan in Stuttgart, Germany.
